Free wedding vs legal wedding

The free package usually buys you a symbolic ceremony. Here is what it costs to make it a legal marriage, brand by brand.

Not legal advice. Prices change. Resort packages, fees and terms change often and vary by resort. Confirm every price and condition with the resort's wedding department, in writing, before you book or pay. Disclaimer

The short version

A symbolic ceremony looks the same in the photos but has no legal effect. A legal wedding is performed or registered by a local official (a judge or civil registrar) and you get a government marriage certificate.

Of the 12 free resort packages we compared, 8 are symbolic by default. Royalton and Hard Rock say it plainly on their own pages: symbolic ceremonies are "not legally binding". Only the Sandals, Beaches and Couples free packages are legal weddings, and they still charge the island's licence or government fee (Couples $250; Sandals $250 to $750 by island), except the Sandals 2027 Jamaica promo, which waives the $250 Jamaica fee.

"Amount not published" means the brand says a judge or civil ceremony costs extra but did not list a price on the pages we read. Ask for it in writing. Bahia Principe (no free package) lists its legal supplement at $850 in the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Mexico.

What a legal wedding adds besides the fee

Many couples do both

A courthouse or registry wedding at home, then the free symbolic ceremony at the resort. It skips the foreign paperwork. Ask your planner which route is cheaper for your destination.

Questions to ask the resort, in writing

  1. Is the free ceremony legal or symbolic?
  2. What does the legal upgrade cost, including judge, documents, blood tests and translations?
  3. How many days before the ceremony must we arrive?
  4. Which government certificate do we get, and when?
